Collecting Antique Axes

Posted by fatcow on January 17, 2012

Edge tools are among the earliest tool forms, with surviving primitive axes dated to 8000 B.C.. Early axes were made by “wrapping” the red hot iron around a form, yielding the eye of the axe. The steel bit, introduced in the 18th century, was laid into the fold at the front and hammered into an edge. The side opposite the bit was later extended into a poll, for better balance and to provide a hammering surface.

The handles took on a variety of shapes, some indicative or origin, others relating to function. The length of the handle had more to do with the arc of the swing that was required. Felling axes took a full swing and therefore needed the longest handles. Early axes have their handles fitted through the eye from the top down and the handles remain in place by locking into the taper of the eye, so they can be removed for sharpening.

Later axes, however, have their handles fit through the eye from the bottom up, and have a wedge driven in from the top. This permanently locks the handle to the axe and was much preferred by American woodsmen. Many axes found today had been discarded because the handle was split or broken off. In most cases they can be bought at a fraction of their value and, with another handle, can be restored to their original condition. Most axe collectors have a stock of older flea-market handles that they use for this restoration. Like plane blades, axe handles might have been replaced two or three times throughout the life of the tool. As long as the handle is “proper,” meaning, the right shape and length for its function, it won’t detract that much from its value.

Collecting Antique Axes

Pricing of antique axes runs the entire gamut from a few dollars to several hundred. Examples of well-made axes would include the Plumb, White, Kelly, Miller and numerous others. Beyond these were axes of sometimes lesser quality, but built to a price, and sold by the thousands. Exceptional examples might include handmade axes, possibly from the local blacksmith, or from a factory that specialized in the handmade article, regardless of price.

There are several types of axes out there such as:

SINGLE BIT FELLING AXE:

This axe is considered the workhorse of the axe family. It is a simple design, varying from a 2 ½ lb. head used by campers to the 4 ½ to 7 lb. head used for forest work. There are heads used in lumbermen’s competition that are up to 12lbs.. With the advent of the two-man crosscut saw, and later the power chain saw, tree no longer are taken down by axes. The axe is more a utility tool for clearing branches off the downed tree, and splitting firewood.

DOUBLE BIT FELLING AXE:

Double bit axes always have straight handles, unlike any other modern axe. Almost all axe handles are hickory. Hickory has both strength and spring, and was found very early to be the best for axe handles. Starting in the late 1800’s a number of axe manufactures adopted intricate logos that were embossed or etched on the head of the axe. Almost 200 different styles have been identified to date and these have also become an interesting collectible.

BROAD AXE:

The broad axe is not as common as the felling axe, and is a lot larger. It’s purpose was to square up logs into beams. It used a much shorter swing that the felling axe, therefore required a much shorter handle. The identifying feature of many of these axes is the chisel edge, that allowed the back side of the axe to be dead flat. Because of that, it posed a problem of clearance for the hands. To keep the hands from being scraped, the handle was canted or swayed away from the flat plane of the axe. This is the feature that should always be looked for when buying a broad axe. If the edge is chisel-sharpened, then the handle should be swayed. As with the felling axe, the broad axe heads have a variety of patterns, mostly a result of geographical preference.

GOOSEWING AXE:

The goose wing axe is one of the most artistic looking tools out there, and it takes it’s name from its resemblance to the wing of a goose in flight. It functions exactly as the chisel-edged broad axe, except that the American version has the handle socket more heavily bent or canted up from the plane of the blade. These axes are large and difficult to forge. Many show cracks and repairs and an original handle is rare. Signed pieces, particularly by American makers, mostly Pennsylvania Dutch, are considerably more valuable. Also of importance is the difference in value between American and European axes, the American ones being worth considerably more. A few well-known 19th century American makers whose names appear imprinted on axes are Stohler, Stahler, Sener, Rohrbach, Addams, and L.& I.J. White.

SHIPWRIGHT’S OR MAST AXE:

This axe is used for shaping ships‘ masts and timbers, and is usually ground on both sides. It varies in length base on local usage. The double pointed ears or lugs are common with this axe.

COOPER’S AXE:

This axe has a lighter handle socket, well canted and carries a very short handle. Although the general differentiation between an axe and a hatchet is that an axe is used with two hands and a hatchet with one, the cooper’s axe is one of the exceptions to the rule. It was used mostly for shaping barrel staves, and was almost always used with one hand while the other held the stave.

COACHMAKER’S AXE:

This is an asymmetrical axe used for shaping coach parts in almost a paring manner. The heads vary in size, some styles taking on a “bearded” effect, hence the nickname “bearded axe.” These axes are almost exclusively of European origin.

ICE AXE:

Back in the day, ice was harvested in the winter from ponds and lakes and stored in ice-housed for summer use. This was an important winter cash crop for many farmers. There was a whole family of tools developed to serve this industry, among them was the ice axe. Again, local patterns create a variety of styles.

FIRE AXE:

These are sought-after collectibles, because many of the older ones have the fire company’s monogram on the head. All have rear pikes used for clearing openings or creating ventilation.

MORTISING AXE:

The blade on these axes are long and narrow to accommodate the size of the mortise hole it was designed to cut, most often for post and beam construction or for post and rail. Some have double bits, one bit sized for the length and the other for the width of the hole.

TRADE AXE:

Trade axes were originally brought over by the French and Spanish and later by the English and were traded to the Indians who held them in very high regard. They were poll-less and small enough to be carried at the belt and used with one hand. The larger variety were known as squaw axes and were used by the women for chopping wood.

TURF or BOG AXE:

Used for cutting turf and peat, these axes are not heavy enough to cut wood.

HATCHET:

Hatchets are small axes used with one hand.

Simple Steps on How to Knit a Scarf

Posted by fatcow on January 13, 2012

Knitting is one of those “do-it-yourself” (DIY) hobbies that give you the satisfaction of creating something aesthetically and functionally beautiful without any extraordinary efforts. Here, we have three simple steps on how to knit a scarf. Knitting a scarf is easy for starters, and helps you practice knitting.

Required Raw Material.

o Yarn. Take 6oz. of smooth and bulky yarn, for knitting a scarf of approximately 6½ by 60 inches.

o A pair of straight knitting needle. Knitting needles are available in a wide selection of materials such as metal, plastic, and bamboo. Choose a size as per your comfort.

o Scissors

o Yarn needle

Wooden Ships Models

The Three Simple Steps on How to Knit a Scarf.

Simple Steps on How to Knit a Scarf

o Cast on. You start knitting a scarf by creating a row of initial loops on one of the knitting needles.

Create a slipknot, place the loop in one of your knitting needles, and hold the needle in your right hand.

Now, make a single loop of yarn around your left thumb.

Slide the needle under the loop then, with the right hand’s index finger bring the yarn over the point of the needle, and place it over the loop.

Next, release the loop in the thumb by slipping it over the point of the needle and pull the yarn gently.

Similarly, make another 11 slipknots, so that we have a total of 12 knots on the needle. The width of the scarf depends on the number of slipknots casted.

o The knit stitch. This is one of the basic knitting stitches.

Hold the needle with the slipknots in your left hand.

Insert the point of the right needle into the first stitch from front to back underneath the left needle.

With your right index finger, bring yarn from under and over the point of the right needle.

Pull the yarn on the right needle through the stitch on the left needle.

Pull back and place the right needle over the left needle. Now, pull off the loop over the left needle onto the right needle, thereby completing one knit stitch.

Continue steps (b) through (e) for the remaining 11 slipknots and keep interchanging sides so that the needle with the stitch is in your left hand and the empty needle in your right.

o Binding off. This is the last stage of knitting.

Knit the first two stitches. With the left needle, slip the first stitch over the second on the right needle. You will be left with one stitch in the right needle. Now, one stitch is bound.

Knit one more stitch and repeat by inserting the left needle into the first stitch on right needle, and pulling it over the new stitch.

Repeat step (b) until you are left with only one stitch. Now, cut the yarn, leaving a 7″ end.

Thread the eye of the yarn needle with this yarn end and weave neatly into the bound stitches.

How to Use a Vertical Engine For Go Karts

Posted by fatcow on January 12, 2012

If you have used a gas engine-powered push lawn mower, you have already operated a vertical shaft engine. Due to the relative availability of old vertical shaft engines, they make an economical choice for the power source of a home made go kart. But, anyone who has built or tried to build a go kart from a lawnmower engine has faced a fundamental mechanical problem. The vertical rotation of the engine must be converted to horizontal rotation in order to turn the wheels of the go kart. This is not as simple as turning the engine on its side as carburetion techniques of almost all lawnmower engines do not allow operation in anything other than the upright position. This article will explain some ways how to use a vertical engine for go karts.

The pioneers of the outboard motor industry also had to address the problem of transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. One solution to the problem of how to use a vertical engine for go karts takes a page out of outboard motor construction. In an outboard motor, the vertical engine turns a shaft that turns bevel gears attached to the shaft of the propeller. The key is use of the bevel gears – a set of gears designed to transfer rotational power to a defined angle and thus transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. A go kart builder would be lucky to have at his/her disposal bevel gears salvaged from an old outboard motor to implement into the design of the go kart.

Wooden Ships Models

A simpler solution to the problem involves the use of a simple belt and pulley system. The go kart builder would attach pulleys to the vertical engines drive shaft and to the axle of the go kart. Then, a belt would be attached to both pulleys. Vertical rotation is transferred to horizontal rotation through a twist in the belt. Unfortunately, this method of how to use a vertical engine for go karts is not as dependable. The belt would be subject to slippage and breakage, as most belts are not intended to be twisted while in motion.

How to Use a Vertical Engine For Go Karts

This article explained two methods of using a lawnmower engine in the construction of a go kart. There are surely several other methods of solving the vertical rotation to horizontal rotation engineering problem, but these two methods would be the most economical and practical for a home hobbyist. The use of bevel gears in go kart construction is more reliable as long as construction is precise, but construction is more complicated and expensive. The twisted belt and pulley method is easy and cheap, but not really reliable. It is up to the builder of the go kart to determine which method they would prefer to use.

How To Use Alcohol Inks

Posted by fatcow on January 10, 2012

Using alcohol inks is something I have not tried before and to be honest I was a little apprehensive, looking at all the different pots of inks, mixers and blending solutions it appeared to be a complex and difficult craft to master.

Alcohol inks are dye based multi surface inks that can be used on a variety of surfaces including glossy paper, dominoes, plastic, metal, shrink plastic metal foil, glass and many other materials.

Wooden Ships Models

Each color of alcohol ink can be intermixed and should be used with a blending solution which can be used to lighten, blend and even remove colors.

How To Use Alcohol Inks

There are also four mixatives, gold, silver, pearl and copper. Together with inks that can be used along side the alcohol inks. They are more solid in colour and have a metallic look to them.

Before you use your inks make sure that the room you are using is well ventilated as they have a strong chemical smell.

You will need a small piece of felt and a small wooden block, or you could make one your self using some wood and some Velcro so you can change the felt when you need to.

Decide which surface you are going to use. If you are making backing paper then I find shiny paper works really well. Choose your ink colors, you can use as many different colors as you like but I tend to stick to just two or three.

Place a few drops of one of the alcohol inks directly onto the felt pad and dab randomly over the paper. Select a different color and repeat the process until the desired look is achieved.

There is no right or wrong way to do this, you can experiment and see what you like the best.

Add a few drops of the blending solution onto the felt pad and dab all over your piece of paper, this will blend the colours together and give them a softer look.

If you would like your design to have a metallic feel then add a few drops of the mixative and once again dab your paper until you are happy wit how it looks.

You can also drop the inks directly onto the surface of the chosen material and add the blending solution in the same way, this will produce a totally different look but will require more ink to be used.

Alcohol inks can be used on so many different materials before you know it you will be changing the color and look of plastic pots and your photo frames.

By using the gold and rustic looking inks you can make an old photo really stand out by decorating the frame making it look aged but not tatty.

Do not be afraid to experiment, you can add as many layers as you like until you get your desired effect.

Guide to Painting Lionel HO and O Scale Model Trains

Posted by fatcow on January 2, 2012

Painting HO and O scale model trains is a great way to personalize your collection or simply to update it. Before beginning, though, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to prepare. You don’t want to stop in the middle of the project because you’re lacking the right tools or because you haven’t thought it through.

All metal and wood surfaces on model trains should be gently sanded until the surface is smooth. Your best bet is to use fine 400 grit sandpaper. It serves its purpose and its texture won’t damage your model trains. If you’re painting plastic, most often, you’ll only need to ensure it’s clean and dry. Since oils from our fingers will transfer onto plastic, you run the risk of the paint not applying properly if it’s not free of oil or other particles. Usually, primer isn’t necessary for trains made of plastic.

Wooden Ships Models

Although higher quality paint brushes will cost a bit more, the investment is worth it in the long run. Brush streaks will be easily seen and the potential for loose fibers to stick to your paint is higher with less expensive paintbrushes. The same applies to your paint. Enamel paint is most versatile and appropriate for HO and O scale model trains. It’s also recommended you consider an airbrush technique for larger areas. This ensures more even coverage and isn’t nearly as time consuming.

Guide to Painting Lionel HO and O Scale Model Trains

If your model trains require more than one color, as most usually do, consider using the newer “painter’s” tape versus traditional masking tape. It’s easier to remove and you’re less likely to be left with the sticky residuals common with masking tape. Another product on the market that’s excellent for model trains is a liquid painting mask. Application is a breeze and once it’s dried, you can continue with your painting project. Once the project is completed, you can easily peel the mask off. You’re left with clean lines where your two paints seamlessly meet.

A few other tips to keep in mind:

o Add a few bb’s to your jars of acrylic paint. It makes mixing easy.

o Remember to thoroughly clean your brushes after each use so that they’re ready for the next project.

o If you apply decals to your recently painted HO and O scale trains, be sure to allow at least 24 hours for the paint to properly dry and set.

o Use warm water to wet the decals with – it easily prepares the glue for setting.

o As a final step, a coat of Dull-Cote seals the decal in place and prevents edging.

By incorporating these tips and preparing in advance, your painting projects for your model trains are far more likely to be successful.
